The Santa Fe Depot is identifiable by its twin towers topped with tiled domes and the zigzag pattern of its glazed exterior tiles. Built for the nineteen fifteen Panama-California Exposition, the station was intended to showcase San Diego as a grand, permanent gateway to the West Coast. Architects Bakewell and Brown designed the building in a Spanish Colonial Revival style, incorporating massive arched entryways and whitewashed walls to mirror the aesthetic of the fairgrounds at Balboa Park.
