The Goddess of Democracy in Portsmouth Square stands as a ten-foot-tall bronze figure atop a granite base, commemorating the pro-democracy movement of nineteen eighty-nine. This sculpture is a permanent replica of the massive, short-lived monument once erected by students in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. While the original was crafted from foam and papier-mâché and destroyed by military forces within five days of its unveiling, this version remains a fixture in the city's Chinatown.
