Great Star Theater

The Great Star Theater at six thirty-six Jackson Street is the last remaining Chinese theater in any Chinatown in the United States. Built in nineteen twenty-five and originally known as the Great China Theater, its exterior is marked by a marquee and a distinctive facade featuring tiled work that has been meticulously matched to its original design. For decades, the venue served as a primary cultural center for the neighborhood, hosting long Cantonese opera performances where audiences would chat, eat, and read the newspaper from their seats.
