The Beacon Grand rises twenty-one stories above the corner of Sutter and Powell Streets, its exterior marked by the ornate, Renaissance Revival style favored by architects Weeks and Day. Originally opened in nineteen twenty-eight as the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, the building was a five million dollar project intended to represent the peak of Roaring Twenties luxury. Guests arrived to innovations like in-room radios, ice water on tap, and a specialized cabinet system known as the Servidor, which allowed staff to deliver laundry or refreshments without entering the room.
