Dewey Monument

The Dewey Monument stands as a towering granite column in the center of Union Square, reaching over eighty-five feet into the air. At its peak rests a nine-foot bronze statue of the Greek goddess Nike, who holds a trident in one hand and a laurel wreath in the other. Designed by architect Newton Tharp and sculptor Robert Ingersoll Aitken, the monument was erected to commemorate Admiral George Dewey’s victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
