Acme Bread Company occupies a space within the Ferry Building Marketplace, identifiable by the constant line of people waiting for hearth-baked loaves and the aroma of flour and fermentation. Founded in nineteen eighty-three by Steve and Suzie Sullivan in Berkeley, the company emerged from Steve Sullivan's time as a busboy at Chez Panisse. Encouraged by Alice Waters to supply the restaurant, he developed his skills after discovering a book on English bread and yeast cookery.
