A bronze bust of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk rests atop a seven-foot-tall marble column near the entrance to the Rose Garden in Golden Gate Park. Masaryk was the first president of Czechoslovakia, serving as a statesman and philosopher who helped lead his nation to independence after the First World War. The monument features the signature of the sculptor, Josef Mařatka, and the date nineteen twenty-six inscribed on the base.
