The bronze figure of Robert Emmet stands in front of the California Academy of Sciences, depicting the twenty-five-year-old Irish revolutionary as he delivers his famous speech from the dock during his sentencing in eighteen oh three. Sculpted by Jerome Connor, the seven-foot-tall statue is one of four identical castings commissioned to commemorate the struggle for Irish independence. It was gifted to the city of San Francisco by former mayor and United States Senator James Duval Phelan.
