The San Francisco Zen Center at three hundred Page Street is recognizable by its tall classical arches and open atrium. Designed by the architect Julia Morgan and completed in nineteen twenty-two, the building was originally commissioned by the Emanu-El Sisterhood for Personal Service as a residence for single women. It provided a place of refuge and job training for European immigrants and others finding their way in the city.
