The Urasenke Foundation in North Beach is distinguished by an authentic eight-mat Japanese tearoom built with West Coast materials. Inside this modern, gallery-like space, master carpenter Imai Makoto worked with American-trained apprentices to assemble the room, which serves as a center for the study and practice of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, known as chanoyu.
