The James Lick Baths stand at one hundred sixty-five Tenth Street, a structure defined by its tall, prominent tower that once supported water tanks for the neighborhood. Built in eighteen ninety by the estate of James Lick, the facility provided free public bathing to a working-class population that largely lacked indoor plumbing. Its north wing contained forty bathtubs for men, while a smaller south wing held twenty for women. Water flowed from wells on the property, heated in a sunken boiler room before being pumped up into ten thousand gallons of storage capacity.
