Julius' Castle

Julius’ Castle is defined by its dramatic, fairytale appearance, featuring medieval-style battlements and pointed arched windows that cling to the steep cliffs of Telegraph Hill. Built starting in nineteen twenty-three by Italian immigrant and restaurateur Julius Roz, the structure was designed by Luigi Mastropasqua as a tribute to an earlier, short-lived tourist attraction on the hill known as Layman’s Wooden Castle. Roz incorporated salvaged redwood and maple paneling from the nineteen fifteen Panama-Pacific International Exposition into the interior, creating a distinct, ornate environment that eventually became a San Francisco landmark.
