The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is defined by a pair of contrasting, contemporary structures that sit within the Yerba Buena Gardens. You can identify the complex by the Galleries and Forum building, designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, which features a light-filled, horizontal facade. Adjacent to it stands the Theater, designed by American architects James Stewart Polshek and Todd Schliemann. These buildings opened in nineteen ninety-three as the centerpiece of a redevelopment project aimed at transforming a former industrial district.
