El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park

El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park is defined by its whitewashed adobe buildings that form a quadrangle, a layout that marks the site of the final military fortress established by Spain in Alta California. Founded on April twenty-first, seventeen eighty-two, the site served as a regional headquarters for soldiers and their families during the Spanish colonial era. Its origins are tied to the coastal defense strategy of Governor Felipe de Neve, who chose this location for its proximity to a sheltered harbor and local water sources. Father Junípero Serra blessed the site as construction began with the labor of local Chumash people.
