La Arcada Plaza is defined by open-air Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and the tiled walkways connecting its shops and restaurants. Built in nineteen twenty-six, the plaza occupies the site where the main downtown Catholic church, Our Lady of Sorrows, once stood before it was destroyed in the Santa Barbara earthquake of nineteen twenty-five. Architect Myron Hunt designed the space to incorporate the style that became the standard for the city's downtown reconstruction.
