The Villa Casa Casuarina is defined by its ornate wrought-iron gates, which bear a prominent Medusa logo and a signature Greek key pattern in gold. Built in nineteen thirty by the Standard Oil heir Alden Freeman, the mansion was modeled after the Alcázar de Colón, the sixteenth-century residence of Diego Columbus in Santo Domingo. Freeman, a philanthropist who felt a deep connection to history, reportedly embedded a stone from the original palace into the entrance of his own home.
