Federal Plaza

Federal Plaza is defined by the stark, black steel-and-glass towers of the Chicago Federal Center, which rise above a broad, granite-paved square. Designed by the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the complex adheres to a rigid grid where every column, light fixture, and pavement tile aligns to emphasize order and minimalism. The plaza serves as the shared outdoor center for these government buildings, which were completed in phases between nineteen sixty-four and nineteen seventy-four to modernize federal offices in the Loop.
