The Inland Steel Building is defined by its gleaming, aquamarine glass facade and stainless steel cladding, which distinguish it from the surrounding stone and masonry of the Chicago Loop. Completed in nineteen fifty-eight, it was the first skyscraper built in this neighborhood after a twenty-year hiatus caused by the Great Depression and the Second World War. The Inland Steel Company commissioned the tower to showcase the resilience of the steel industry, famously requesting a building that would literally spell steel.
