River City Apartments is recognized by its distinctive, serpentine concrete structure that hugs the South Branch of the Chicago River. Completed in nineteen eighty-six, this building was designed by architect Bertrand Goldberg as the final iteration of his urban housing projects. Goldberg intended for the complex to function as a self-contained city within a city, initially imagining a much larger development that would provide residents with medical clinics, educational facilities, and daily services all under one roof.
