El Sol Brillante stands behind iron gates that open onto five hundred twenty-two East Twelfth Street. This community garden occupies four lots that were filled with the ash of four burnt-out buildings until Nineteen Seventy-Seven. While the Lower East Side faced widespread disinvestment and decay during that decade, members of the Eleventh Street Movement decided to clear the rubble and create a space for local food production and nature.
