Tompkins Square Park

Tompkins Square Park is defined by its wide, tree-lined paths and its reputation as a historic site for dissent and counterculture in the East Village. Covering ten and a half acres between Seventh and Tenth Streets, the park was purchased by the city in eighteen thirty-four to drain and grade former salt marshes. It takes its name from Daniel D. Tompkins, who served as Vice President of the United States under James Monroe.
