Washington Square Arch

The Washington Square Arch stands seventy-seven feet tall as a white marble entrance to the park, marking the southern end of Fifth Avenue. Designed by Stanford White, the structure is crafted from Tuckahoe marble and features a wide central opening that aligns with the street. It was built to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of George Washington's first inauguration, replacing a temporary wood and plaster version erected nearby in eighteen eighty-nine for the centennial celebration.
