The E.V. Haughwout Building is a five-story structure defined by its ornate, cream-colored cast-iron facades that wrap around the corner of Broadway and Broome Street. Completed in eighteen fifty-seven, the building was designed by John P. Gaynor and modeled after a sixteenth-century Venetian library. Its exterior is composed of repeating arched windows set between columns, a style that allowed for larger glass openings than traditional masonry could support.
