The Surrogate’s Courthouse, located at thirty-one Chambers Street, is recognizable by the fifty-four granite sculptures that decorate its exterior and the eight thirty-six-foot tall Corinthian columns above its main entrance. Completed in nineteen oh seven, this seven-story, steel-framed structure was originally built as the Hall of Records to provide a fireproof vault for the city's paper documents.
