The Brooklyn Bridge is defined by its massive stone towers, constructed from limestone, granite, and cement, which reach two hundred seventy-seven feet above the East River. These two Gothic-inspired arches support a complex web of steel-wire cables, a design that made this the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened in eighteen eighty-three.
