Federal Hall National Memorial

Federal Hall National Memorial is distinguished by a large, bronze statue of George Washington standing on its front steps, his right hand raised as if swearing an oath. This Greek Revival structure, finished in eighteen forty-two, sits at the corner of Wall and Pine Streets. While its marble columns and massive facade look like a deliberate monument to the American founding, the building originally served as a United States Customs House and later a sub-treasury, where heavy vaults once held millions of dollars in gold and silver.
