The Battery is a twenty-five-acre waterfront park at the southernmost tip of Manhattan, identifiable by its open harbor views and the circular, red-brick walls of the Castle Clinton National Monument. Its name comes from the artillery batteries positioned here in the late seventeenth century to defend the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam.
