The New York Chinese Community Center occupies a building at sixty-two Mott Street that many in the neighborhood refer to as Chinatown’s town hall. It houses the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, an organization established in eighteen eighty-three to support the needs of Chinese immigrants during a period of widespread legal exclusion. Because of its long-standing role as an umbrella group for various clan, trade, and civic associations, the association historically functioned as a quasi-governmental body for the local Chinese community.
