The storefront at three hundred fifteen Bowery began its life as a nineteenth-century saloon within the Palace Lodging House. In December nineteen seventy-three, Hilly Kristal took over the space, intending to host performers of country, bluegrass, and blues. He named the venue CBGB & OMFUG, an acronym standing for those genres plus "Other Music For Uplifting Gourmandizers," a term he used to describe a voracious listener of music.
