The Stonewall Inn occupies two modest buildings at fifty-one and fifty-three Christopher Street, distinguished by a continuous, fifty-foot-wide facade that has remained largely unchanged since the nineteen sixties. Originally constructed as horse stables in the mid-nineteenth century, these storefronts eventually became the site of a pivotal confrontation in American history. In the early morning hours of June twenty-eighth, nineteen sixty-nine, a routine police raid on this gay bar met with unexpected, spontaneous resistance from its patrons.
