The Public Theater

The Public Theater is housed within a grand, Romanesque Revival brick building at four hundred twenty-five Lafayette Street. Originally constructed in stages between eighteen fifty-three and eighteen eighty-one to serve as the Astor Library, the building features three combined structures that face Astor Place. It stands as a rare survivor of the area's nineteenth-century architectural history, having narrowly escaped demolition in the nineteen sixties after the library moved out and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society vacated the premises.
