St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery

St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery sits at the intersection of East Tenth Street and Second Avenue, distinguished by its fieldstone Georgian walls and a Greek Revival steeple that rises above the surrounding East Village. This location is the oldest site of continuous religious worship in Manhattan. It occupies the ground where the Dutch colonial governor Peter Stuyvesant built a private family chapel in sixteen sixty. When Stuyvesant died in sixteen seventy-two, he was interred in a vault beneath that original chapel.
