The Fillmore East stands out for the small mosaic tile embedded in the lamppost outside its former entrance at one hundred five Second Avenue. Between March nineteen sixty-eight and June nineteen seventy-one, this building—originally a nineteen twenty-six Yiddish theater called the Commodore—operated as a premier rock venue under promoter Bill Graham. Known as the Church of Rock and Roll, it hosted acts like Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, and the Allman Brothers Band, who recorded their breakthrough live album here.
