The most recognizable feature here is a black steel cube resting on one of its corners, known to most simply as the Alamo or the Cube. Created by artist Tony Rosenthal in nineteen sixty-seven, the eight-foot sculpture is built of Cor-Ten steel and weighs eighteen hundred pounds. It stands in the center of the plaza, an area that serves as a bustling meeting point at the intersection of Lafayette Street, Astor Place, and Cooper Square.
