One Police Plaza is a red-brick, brutalist structure shaped like an inverted pyramid that widens as it rises. Dedicated in nineteen seventy-three, this building houses the headquarters of the New York City Police Department. It replaced an earlier Beaux-Arts headquarters located about a mile north on Centre Street, which had served the department for over sixty years. Architects Gruzen and Partners designed the building to anchor a postwar civic revitalization project, intentionally siting it near City Hall and the Municipal Building.
