The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel ventilation building is recognizable by its severe, granite-faced design, which rises like a monumental block near the southern tip of Manhattan. Completed in nineteen fifty, it is one of four structures built to serve the two-mile-long Hugh L. Carey Tunnel. These facilities house powerful fans that replace the entire volume of air within the tunnel every ninety seconds, ensuring that carbon monoxide from thousands of daily vehicles does not reach dangerous levels.
