The Brooklyn Bridge is defined by its massive stone towers built in the Gothic Revival style, which rise high above the East River to support four thick cables made of thousands of galvanized steel wires. When it opened on May twenty-fourth, eighteen eighty-three, this bridge was the first permanent crossing between the cities of New York and Brooklyn and the longest suspension bridge in the world.
