The Village Vanguard is marked by a long, red awning stretched over the sidewalk at one hundred seventy-eight Seventh Avenue South. It sits in a basement level beneath the street, squeezed into a triangular sliver of space created in nineteen fourteen when the city sheared off building corners to make room for the subway.
