The Barclay stands at the southeast corner of Rittenhouse Square, identifiable by its grand, stately architecture that rises twenty-two stories above the park. Opened in October nineteen twenty-nine, the building was designed by the firm of James Edwin Ruthven Carpenter Junior to resemble the Ritz in Paris. It began its life as one of the city's most opulent hotels, offering furnished rooms and a ballroom to Philadelphia's elite.
