Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is identified by a prominent sign reading Jesus Saves that overlooks the glass-and-steel skyscrapers of downtown Houston. Founded in January eighteen sixty-six, only seven months after the end of the Civil War, the congregation was organized by formerly enslaved people who initially held services in a brush arbor along the banks of Buffalo Bayou.
