The five-story Kiam Building stands at the corner of Main and Preston Streets, identifiable by its brick Romanesque Revival facade with arched windows and rusticated masonry. Completed in eighteen ninety-three, the building was commissioned by clothier Ed Kiam to house his haberdashery on the ground floor and professional offices above. It gained immediate attention as one of the city's first proto-skyscrapers, using load-bearing masonry walls rather than a steel skeleton to support its height.
