Houston City Hall is a ten-story, light-colored limestone building that rises above the surrounding downtown skyline with a distinct Art Deco silhouette. Designed by architect Joseph Finger and completed in nineteen thirty-nine, the structure is clad in Texas Cordova limestone, a material often called shellstone because it is packed with small, visible fossils. The building’s facade is marked by clean geometric lines, dark spandrels that draw the eye upward, and ornamental friezes of Texas wildcats that crown the tower and lower wings.
