Cairns Cenotaph

The Cairns Cenotaph features a sandstone soldier statue standing at ease, rifle in hand, atop a tall obelisk that gazes out toward the Coral Sea. Constructed in nineteen twenty-five and unveiled on ANZAC Day in nineteen twenty-six, this granite and sandstone monument was originally built at the intersection of Abbott and Shields Streets. It was the most expensive soldier statue memorial in Queensland at the time, largely due to the inclusion of four electric clock faces that once served as the official town timepiece.
