The Cairns Museum occupies the historic School of Arts building, recognizable by its traditional wrap-around tropical verandah and the words School of Arts cut into a timber screen on its facade. Constructed starting in nineteen oh seven, the building stands at the corner of Lake and Shield streets. It served for seventy years as the home of the city's only subscription library before its conversion into a museum space.
