Cairns City Library

The Cairns City Library is defined by eight Ionic columns that stand before its main entrance on Abbott Street. Constructed between nineteen twenty-nine and nineteen thirty, the building served as the official Cairns City Council Chambers for nearly seventy years. Designed by architects Hill and Taylor, the structure was built from reinforced concrete during a period when the city was expanding rapidly as a major port for Far North Queensland.
