Adelaide Gaol

museum

The Adelaide Gaol is defined by its massive stone walls, topped in sections with loose, unmortared bricks designed to shift and tumble if a prisoner attempted to climb over. Built between eighteen forty-one and eighteen forty-six, this facility served as South Australia's first permanent prison for one hundred and forty-seven years. It stands today as one of the two oldest public buildings remaining in the state, sharing that distinction with Government House.
