Trinity Church Adelaide on North Terrace is identified by the large clock face mounted on its stone tower. Established in eighteen thirty-six, it holds the title of the colony's pioneer church, founded only months after the settlement of Adelaide began. The Reverend Charles Howard, the first Colonial Chaplain, originally intended to house his congregation in a prefabricated wooden structure brought from England. When that building arrived damaged and unusable, he held early services under a canvas sail until a permanent stone church could be raised on this site, which was donated by Pascoe St Leger Grenfell.
