The Adelaide Arcade is recognizable by the two prominent domes at its entrances and the ornate glass-paneled ceiling that runs the length of its central promenade. Opened in eighteen eighty-five to connect Rundle Mall and Grenfell Street, the structure was built from two million bricks and fifty thousand glass panes to replace a furniture warehouse destroyed by fire. It was one of the first buildings in the city to use electric lighting, generated by a large engine housed in what is now shop nine.
