State Library of South Australia

The State Library of South Australia is marked by the distinctive, French Renaissance architecture of the Mortlock Wing, which features a prominent mansard roof and towering wooden shelves inside. This building, which opened in eighteen eighty-four, is the centerpiece of the library’s collection of structures on North Terrace. It was designed to house the colony's growing archive and serves as a reminder of early plans to establish a public library even before the province of South Australia was officially settled.
