National War Memorial

The National War Memorial stands at the corner of North Terrace and Kintore Avenue, positioned at a forty-five-degree angle to the street to catch the morning sun. Built from Harcourt granite and white Barossa marble, the monument is easily identified by its lack of soldiers. Instead of depicting battle scenes, sculptor Rayner Hoff designed the structure to show the human cost of conflict. On the front, a relief captures the Spirit of Duty calling a farmer, a student, and a young woman toward sacrifice, while the reverse side features a winged spirit holding the body of a fallen youth.
